Concerned Citizens of King Township

Schomberg

Over the past few years, Schomberg has been the fastest growing town in King and the only community with a sewer system. Laurier Construction Site photo by CCKTThe Schomberg Community Plan was completed in 1998. The plan contemplated a population of 2100 by 2001 with the addition of 60 townhomes, 32 seniors units, 373 family units and 56 industrial units. Since 1998, a number of subdivisions have been built or approved including: Laurier homes, Mason homes- off Cooper Drive and Roselena Drive.  Recently, a six storey condo project was approved by Council. To accommodate this additional growth upgrades have been completed to the Schomberg sewer plant.

A draft plan for an extension of the Schomberg industrial area is currently under consideration. Community Plans are generally reviewed every five years with a major review every ten years. Therefore, we can anticipate the Schomberg Plan will come under review in the near future. www.king.ca/files/documents/Schomberg Community Plan.pdf (2.7 Mb)

The Arena in Schomberg is one of the main community hubs and home of the Schomberg Cougars. This spring, a large federal infrastructure grant was received by the Township to upgrade the Schomberg arena. The upgrade includes a 68,000 square foot ice surface and a four sheet curling facility.

Schomberg is home of the Dufferin Marsh, a conserved wetland in town that is managed by the Dufferin Marsh Committee- see www.dufferinmarsh.ca

'The Dufferin Marsh is a wetland that provides for a variety of natural features and functions. During major rainfall or spring melt it becomes inundated with water, protecting other areas from flooding. The water held in the Marsh is cleansed through biological processes and filtered into the ground, recharging the groundwater system.

The Dufferin Marsh contains a variety of plant communities, which support resident and migratory birds and animals. More than 50 species of birds have been observed in the wetland. The avian diversity is unusual and significant for a small wetland.'
